Nyepi: Bali's Day of Silence, explained
Updated on 19 October 2026
Once a year the whole island stops: no flights, no traffic, no lights. Here's what Nyepi is, what happens around it, and how to make the most of a day of real silence.
Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year in the Saka calendar, and it's like nothing else in the world. For 24 hours the entire island goes quiet. The date changes every year with the lunar calendar and usually falls in March, so check the exact date before you plan travel.
The days before
- Melasti: a few days before Nyepi, communities carry temple objects in colourful processions to the sea or a sacred spring for purification. If you're near the coast you may see them on the beach.
- The eve (Tawur Kesanga): on the night before Nyepi, villages parade ogoh-ogoh, huge papier-mâché figures of demons and spirits, through the streets with torches and gamelan, to drive away negative forces. It's loud, joyful and one of the most spectacular nights of the year.
Nyepi day: the four rules
From around 6am until 6am the next day, Balinese Hindus observe the Catur Brata Penyepian, four restraints:
- Amati Geni: no fire or light.
- Amati Karya: no work.
- Amati Lelungan: no travel.
- Amati Lelanguan: no entertainment or pleasure-seeking.
Everyone on the island, visitors included, is expected to stay indoors, keep lights low at night and keep noise down. The airport closes, roads are empty, and local guards (pecalang) patrol the streets. Hotels stay open for guests but keep activity inside and quiet.
The day after
Ngembak Geni is a day of visiting family and friends and asking forgiveness, and life slowly returns to normal.
How to spend Nyepi well
- Stock up on food and water the day before. Shops and warungs close.
- Download anything you need. Internet is often limited or switched off on the day.
- Treat it as a retreat: journal, read, practise yoga, meditate, sleep. Many people say it's the most restful day of their year.
- At night, if the sky is clear, look up. With the island dark, the stars are extraordinary.
Some studios and resorts offer Nyepi retreat packages so you can spend the day in silence with gentle practice. Check our timetables in the days around Nyepi for special sessions.
