What is a sound bath? A first-timer's guide

Updated on 19 October 2026

Lie down, close your eyes, and let the sound wash over you. Here's what really happens in a sound bath, and how to make the most of your first one.

A sound bath is a guided relaxation where you lie down and listen while a practitioner plays instruments that create long, layered tones. There's no "bathing" involved: you are bathed in sound. In Bali you'll see it called sound healing, sound journey, gong bath or singing bowl session.

Most sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. You'll usually start with a short introduction, sometimes a little gentle movement or breathwork, then lie down on a mat with a pillow and blanket. The practitioner plays for most of the session while you rest with your eyes closed. Some people drift close to sleep, some feel emotional, some simply feel calm. All of that is normal.

  • Gongs: big, enveloping waves of sound. A "gong bath" is mostly gongs and can feel intense.
  • Singing bowls: metal (often Tibetan-style) or crystal bowls that ring with a long, pure tone.
  • Others: chimes, drums, handpans, tuning forks, and sometimes voice and mantra.
  • Comfortable, warm-ish clothes. You'll lie still for a long time and air conditioning can feel cold.
  • Socks or a light layer, a water bottle, and an empty-ish stomach.
  • Most studios provide mats, pillows and blankets. Check when you book.
  • Arrive early so you can settle in and pick a spot.
  • Tell the practitioner if you're pregnant, have a pacemaker, epilepsy or are very sensitive to loud sounds. Gongs especially can be strong.
  • There's nothing to "do". If your mind wanders, just come back to the sound.
  • Give yourself a quiet moment afterwards rather than rushing straight out.

Group sound baths at the big studios are the easiest and most affordable way to try it. Smaller dedicated sound spaces often offer private or small-group sessions, which feel more personal.
